Tervetuloa

Satavuotisjuhliensa kunniaksi Lyseonpuiston lukio on käynnistänyt hankkeen koulun rakentamiseksi sisällissodan runtelemaan Kongon demokraattiseen tasavaltaan. Kunnianhimoisena tavoitteena on kerätä 30 000 euroa, josta kaksi kolmasosaa on jo kasassa. Hankkeen suojelijana toimii rouva Eeva Ahtisaari.

Koulu, jossa voidaan tarjota opetusta 650 lapselle, rakennetaan paikallisin voimin yhdessä Kirkon Ulkomaanavun kanssa. Koulu on monelle kongolaiselle ensimmäinen askel köyhyydestä irtautumiseksi sekä koko maalle harppaus kohti demokratiaa ja vakautta.

Welcome

As an honour for its hundreth anniversary Lyseonpuisto high school has started a project to build a school in  the Democratic Republic of the Congo  ruined by a civil war. An ambitious project is to collect 30 000 euros, two thirds of which  have already been collected.  The protector of the collection is Mrs Eeva Ahtisaari.

A school, where education can be given to 650 pupils, is to be built with the help of the local inhabitants and Finn  Church Aid. The school is going to be the first step from poverty and a big step for the whole country towards democracy and stability.

 Kongon demokraattinen tasavalta

1908 Leopold II joutui luovuttamaan siirtomaansa Belgian parlamentille Kongossa tehtyjen hirmutekojen tultua julki. Kumiterrorina tunnetun ajanjakson aikana 15 miljoonaa kongolaista, puolet koko väestöstä, menetti henkensä sotilaan, nääntymisen tai sairauden viemänä.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo

Congo is the size of Western Europe, has extremely high natural resources and is covered by lots of forests; with the explorers and the adventurous heart of Africa.

In  1870 there was an explorer called Henry Stanley travelling through the continent. He attracted the attention of the King of Belgium  called Leopold II. Leopold recruited Stanley to make expeditions by the river Congo to meet the chieftains to sign treaties which give the tracts to Leopold. Thus Congo became the  property of Leopold. This colony was called the Congo Free State whose  wealth was  rubber. Because of the demand of  minerals in industrialisation the country was a gold mine for Leopold. With the yields he constructed huge palaces and gardens. The  quota of rubber was set up  for the local villages. If the quota wasn't achieved the army of the Free State would destroy the villages. Often the white army officers told the soldiers to bring a torn arm for every bullet they used.

In 1908 Leopold II had to relinquish his personal control of the colonies over the state to the Parliament of Belgium because of the atrocities which had came into daylight.

During the period of so called rubber terror 15 million people in Congo, the half of the whole population lost their lives because of war, starving or sickness.

Kongo itsenäistyi Belgiasta 1960. Itsenäisyysjuhlissa vaaleilla valittu pääministeri Patrice Lumumba piti intohimoisen puheen, jossa hän arvosteli jyrkästi entisiä siirtomaaisäntiä. Siirtomaavallan aikana Kongon valtavat luonnonrikkaudet, öljylähteet, kulta- timantti- hiili-, kupari- ja tinakaivokset omistivat eurooppalaiset ja amerikkalaiset kaivoskonsernit. Kun Lumumba ilmoitti haluavansa kansallistaa rikkaudet, länsimaat huolestuivat. Sotilaskomentaja Joseph Mobutu kapinoi Belgian ja Yhdysvaltojen tuella; pääministeri Lumumba vangittiin ja teloitettiin. Mobutu kukisti rautaisin ottein ja eurooppalaisten palkkasotilaiden avulla vastarinnan ja nimitti itsensä presidentiksi 1965.

Congo became independent of Belgium in 1960. At the independence celebration Patrice Lumumba who had been elected prime minister gave a passionate speech criticizing the previous colonies heavily. During the colonial period all the enormous natural sources, oil sources, gold, diamond, coal,  copper and tin  mines  were owned by European and American mining concerns. As Lulumba announced that he would nationalize these sources, the western countries became worried. Joseph Mobutu, the commanding officer was rebelling with the support of Belgium and the United States; Lumumba, the prime minister was imprisoned and executed. Mobutu suppressed the resistance with severe measures and with  the help of European mercenaries declared  himself  a president in 1965.

Mobutu otti lisänimen Sese-Seko, ’suuri valloittaja’, ja uudelleennimesi maan Zaireksi. Mobutun valtakausi oli läpimätä ja korruption ryvettämä. Antamalla monikansallisten korporaatioiden haalia luonnonvarat hän kääri massiiviset provisiot sveitsiläiselle pankkitililleen väestön riutuessa. Yhdysvaltain, Ranskan ja Belgian tuella Mobutu pysyi vallassa 32 vuotta.

Mobutu renamed himself: Sese- Seko, 'The Great Conqueror' and renamed the country as Zaire. The administration period of Mobutu was totally rotten and covered by corruption. By letting the multinational corporations gather natural sources he was able to collect massive provisions on his bank account when the population was starving. With support of the United States, France and Belgium Mobutu was in power for 32 years.

The neighbouring country of Congo, poor Rwanda was a colony of Belgium as well. The colonial authorities separated two parts of the nations by  measuring their noses.  There were nomad- Tutsis and farming- Hutus among them. When the country became independent the majority of the Hutu people was in power and started a furious agitation against the Tutsi people. Finally this rebellion  culminated to a genocide and in 1994 one million Tutsi people were killed.

Ruandan kansanmurhan jälkiseuraukset ravistelivat itäistä Zairea. Ugandasta hyökännyt tutsiarmeija pysäytti kansanmurhan, ja  miljoonaa hutua pakeni kostoa peläten rajan yli länteen. Tuomitakseen sotarikolliset tutsiarmeija eteni perässä. Kongon ensimmäisessä sodassa 1997 Laurent Kabila, kongolainen kapinalliskomentaja, syrjäytti Mobutun tutsien tukemana ja valloitti nopeasti pääkaupunki Kinshasan.

The consequences of the genocide in Rwanda shook heavily eastern Zaire. A Tutsi army attacking from Uganda stopped the genocide and two million Hutus escaped in fear of revenge across the boarder to the west. In order to condemn the war criminals the Tutsi army was following them. In the first war of Congo, Laurent Kabila,  a rebel commandor, supplanted Mobutu with help of the Tutsis and conquered the capital, Kinshasa fast.

However, Kabila was quarrelling with his alliances the Tutsis of Uganda and Rwanda which led to a complete war between these two countries. Several African countries as Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Tzad sent their armed forces to support Kabila. In this way the second war of Congo, which was caused by the dominance of natural resources, widened to the World War of Africa. In 2002 Kabila was assassinated and his son, Joseph came to power. The young Kabila made a nominal peace. The countries pulled away their forces but eastern Congo was still in the hands of rebelling guerrilla groups. The second war of Congo that has gone on until these days, the most destructive war after the Second World War has already taken more than five and a half million lives.

In 2006 there was a presidential election under the control of the European Union and the United Nations when Joseph Kabila was elected president. In January 2008  peace was made in eastern Congo between the government and the rebellion groups. This peace has lasted until today and makes it possible to build the school in eastern Congo.
